Abstract. Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Modern progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engi-neering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. In this review, the re-search devoted to fiber formation process, such as electrospinning and electrospray, formation of a liquid jet in an electrostatic field, a stable liquid jet, electrohydrodynamics of the liquid jet molding process and influence of the macromolecular factor on the electrospinning process. The data are from articles published to the present time on the theory and experimental investigations of fiber formation.

Key words. Electrospinning, liquid jet, fibers, nanofibers, theory.
